Project Overview

The Hawai Bridge is a 175 metre single-span network arch across the Lohit River near Chagwanti in Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh. The work is being executed for the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

Hawai is the headquarters of Anjaw, India's easternmost administered district. The bridge sits on a critical road link toward Kibithoo near the Indo-Tibetan border, and replaces a much smaller existing crossing that is unreliable through the monsoon.

Why a single 175m network arch

The Lohit at this point is fast, deep and carries enormous boulder-laden flow in the wet months. A single 175 metre arch keeps the river bed entirely clear of piers, which removes the scour risk that has limited the life of earlier bridges in the area.

Status

Substructure work is complete. Superstructure erection is starting now. Progress photographs will be added to this page as the arch goes up.
