Varapuzha Bridge is a three-span balanced cantilever bridge over the backwaters of Kerala, with a span arrangement of 83 + 120 + 83 m. Poddar Infratech executed the project for Oriental Structural Engineers, with NHAI as the project principal.
The cantilever arms from the two piers were cast using four form travellers operating simultaneously. The outer 23 m of each side span was cast on temporary staging from below, and stitched together with the advancing cantilever arm once it reached the end of the span.
The bridge was built over backwaters, and extensive use of barges was required to carry out the works in the marine environment — for material movement, formwork access, and construction operations across the water.
